What is Shiatsu? Print E-mail

Based on the meridian system and the millenia old holistic medical approach of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),  Shiatsu is becoming an increasingly recognised Japanese therapy for releasing tension and revitalising the system. The word “Shiatsu” means “thumb pressure” but feet, elbows and palms can also be used during a session.

ImageThrough touch the practitioner can release tension and balance the body not just on the physical but also the emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Treatments are given with the client fully clothed (and wrapped in a blanket, should they so wish) on a comfortable futon at floor level. Gentle leaning pressure is used into the points which makes the treatment deeply relaxing. Many clients have commented on the feeling of well being they experience during and after a treatment.

Pressure on the acupoints has been scientifically proved to release enkephalins or “happy hormones” from the brain which in turn relax the body. Work on specific meridian channels clears blocks or strengthens weak points, allowing the body’s ki or natural energy to flow more easily through the system.  A particular bonus is that a Shiatsu treatment allows you to experience levels of relaxation you never imagined possible. This is of crucial benefit since it is now generally acknowledged that stress and tension play a major role in many illnesses.
